A Special Blood Drive for Trauma Survivors Day
In recognition of Trauma Awareness Month and National Trauma Survivors Day, Inova Blood Donor Services proudly partnered with the Inova Fairfax trauma team in May to host a partnership event. The day included a Stop the Bleed® training course and a community blood drive, held in honor of the patients whose lives have been forever changed by trauma, and the generous donors who help save them.
More than 30 blood donors participated in the event, each making a vital impact. But the most powerful moment came during a moving reunion between Juan D., a trauma survivor, and one of the blood donors who helped save his life.
Juan’s story is extraordinary. After a motorcycle accident, he spent two months at Inova Fairfax Hospital and received over 20 units of blood—more than the total volume in an average adult body. During the event, Juan courageously shared his journey, crediting the trauma team and local blood donors for giving him a second chance at life.
“Because of you, I’m here today,” he said, addressing the crowd with gratitude. “Thank you for being part of my story.”
In a full-circle moment, Juan even donated blood that day to pay it forward, showing his gratitude by helping future patients in need.
This event also featured a Stop the Bleed® course, equipping community members with lifesaving skills to control severe bleeding, crucial knowledge in emergencies. Hosting the course alongside the blood drive emphasized the many ways people can take action and be prepared to save a life.
We are proud to support the trauma teams at both Inova Fairfax and Inova Loudoun hospitals by providing blood products when every second counts. Events like this reinforce how connected we all are—patients, donors, and medical professionals.
