Fighting with Strength, Smiling with Hope
Braylon—affectionately known as Bray—was a typical active 12-year-old when he began feeling more tired than usual. In the weeks leading up to his diagnosis, his energy had dwindled, and something didn’t seem right. On February 26, 2024, his school nurse, Ms. Miles, made a call that changed everything.
“I don’t want to alarm you,” she said, “but Bray hasn’t been feeling well, and I think something is wrong.”
Trusting her instincts, Braylon’s mom turned to the place she knew best, Inova. Her own mother works here, and she knew Braylon would be in good hands.
That night, their family’s world was turned upside down with a diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer. At just 12 years old, Braylon faced a battle that no child should ever have to fight.
He was admitted immediately, and at 11:30 pm on his very first night in the hospital, Braylon received his first blood transfusion. That life-giving moment was just the beginning. In the early stages of treatment, Braylon needed transfusions almost every other week, more than a dozen transfusions to date.
For kids like Braylon, blood and platelet donations aren’t just part of treatment—they’re the fuel that helps them keep fighting. Chemotherapy, while essential, takes a toll on the body, depleting the blood cells needed for energy, healing, and immunity. Every transfusion Bray received helped restore his strength and brought color back to his cheeks.
“There were days when Bray was too tired to talk or sit up. But after a transfusion, especially platelets, you could see the difference almost immediately. Blood donations gave him energy and hope,” his family shared.
Today, Braylon is receiving his care at the Inova Schar Cancer and the Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital, surrounded by compassionate caregivers and a community of support. And while the journey is far from over, every drop of donated blood and every platelet unit has helped him take the next step forward.
To those who have donated—thank you. You are part of Braylon’s story.
And to those who haven’t yet—please consider making a donation. Children like Braylon are counting on you.
