As the seasons change, so do the needs of our patients. This September, Inova Blood Donor Services is encouraging donors to roll up their sleeves for platelet and double red cell donations—two types of specialized donations that make an extraordinary impact.
To thank you for giving the gift of life, when you donate platelets or double reds Sunday through Thursday in September, you’ll receive $20 in e-gift cards!
Why platelets and double reds matter
- Platelets are vital for cancer patients, trauma victims, and those undergoing major surgeries. They help blood clot and prevent life-threatening bleeding
- Double red cell donations collect two units of red cells in one visit, which are critical for accident victims, surgical patients, and those with severe anemia.
By donating, you’re ensuring that patients who need these specific components receive them when every second counts.
Where to donate
You can make a platelet or double red donation 7 days a week at one of our three donor centers:
- CentreMed – Centreville, VA
- Dulles – Sterling, VA
- Woodburn – Annandale, VA (near Inova Fairfax Hospital)
Who can donate?
✅ Ideal blood types for platelets: A+, B+, AB+, AB-
✅ Ideal blood types for double reds: A-, B-, O+, O-
Special Eligibility Notes:
- Platelet donors:
- Must weigh at least 110 lbs.
- Avoid aspirin-related products 48 hours before donating.
- If you have been pregnant before, please call before scheduling to arrange HLA testing.
- Double red donors:
- Males: At least 5’1” and 130 lbs.
- Females: At least 5’5” and 150 lbs.
